On the 12th of April, over 70 members of the Homestead Police Department (HPD) and of the Corrections Department participated in the annual Florida Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. Beginning at the Publix Supermarket in Homestead Towne Square, they ran along Campbell drive to the Cambridge School, where they were greeted by a crowd of cheering students.

Cameron Pearson of Florida Special Olympics told us that throughout the state over 5,000 law enforcement members will participate in this year’s torch run. He continued, “The Torch Runs will raise over 3.5 million dollars to support over 70,000 athletes around the state.” These athletes are provided shoes, uniforms, travel and lodging, at no cost to them, as they compete in around 200 events each year. Pearson also said that Florida Special Olympics has become the largest health care provider for individuals with intellectual disabilities in Florida. Homestead Police Captain Yanko Rodriguez said, “We all enjoy helping support the Florida Special Olympics by participating in this annual run. Thanks to all the participants, the Cambridge School Students, and to Publix for their support. It’s also a great opportunity to recognize the Special Olympics’ athletes. I look forward to doing it again next year.”
