Mental health in Nigeria has been a long-standing issue, but efforts were made with the passing of the Mental Health Act in 2021. However, the government has yet to establish a Department of Mental Health Services in the Federal Ministry of Health, hindering the full implementation of the act.
The Act allows for the provision of advanced mental health services, healthcare, humane care, and rehabilitation. Without the Department of Mental Health Services, the country continues to operate under the outdated Lunacy Act of 1958.
Experts stress the importance of establishing this department to protect the rights of individuals with mental health conditions and ensure proper accreditation of mental health facilities. The lack of action on this front also hampers the establishment of the National Mental Health Fund.
While progress is being made towards establishing the department, there is still work to be done. The government must prioritize mental health, allocate funds, and fulfill the requirements outlined in the Mental Health Act to provide necessary support and care for those in need.
