The Homestead City Council is in the process of discussing an ordinance that would establish a temporary moratorium on the building of large housing developments.
For the next year, the city would not accept applications for the construction of townhomes, multi-family units, and cluster homes on lots less than 7,500 square feet per acre or six units or more on an acre of land.
In recent meetings, Mayor Steven Losner and council members have said they would like to see a year-long moratorium on large housing projects. There is concern that the city’s roads, schools, and infrastructure cannot accommodate the larger number of people who are living or want to live in the city. Many city leaders have said they want more stores, restaurants, and other businesses to come to Homestead. There is a strong demand for higher-quality restaurants.
Many city residents want a vibrant downtown area. They are hoping to see high technology and healthcare businesses in the city while keeping its agricultural vibrance. They want to see more professional offices in the community as well. This will help to make Homestead a popular destination.
